Running a Small Business - October Update 2025

Running a Small Business - October Update 2025

Susan Hollitt

Hi, I'm Susie, the face behind Cards and Crafts by Susie, a small handmade card business based in Australia.

This month I'm sharing a behind-the-scenes look at what running my handmade business has looked like throughout October, from markets and custom orders to Christmas preparations and special moments spent with family and friends.

October started a little slower than usual. With school holidays and a long weekend, business naturally took a back seat for a few days. Sometimes that's just the rhythm of running a small business, and I've learned to embrace those quieter moments rather than fight them.

Even though it was a slower start, there was still plenty happening behind the scenes. I spent time preparing for the upcoming Bremer Valley Gallery Trail Market in Callington, and I was also given the exciting opportunity to manage the market's website and social media. It was something completely different from my usual card making, but I really enjoyed helping promote such a wonderful local event.

To top it all off, my brand-new market banner arrived, and I couldn't wait to see it set up on my stall.

  • What I'm learning: Running a small business often opens doors to opportunities you never expected. Saying yes to something different can help you grow new skills and build stronger community connections.
  • Tip: If you're involved in local markets, don't just focus on your own stall. Supporting the event as a whole can help build relationships and attract more visitors for everyone.

Market day arrived, and thankfully everything went smoothly. I sold a few products, enjoyed chatting with visitors, and had lots of fun doing crafts with the children. Those interactions are one of my favourite parts of attending markets because they remind me why I love creating handmade products.

Not long afterwards, I received two Etsy orders for wreath kits and another order through my website for a bouquet of 20 origami roses. I always love seeing orders come through from different places because each one represents someone choosing to support my small business.

What I'm learning: Every sale, no matter how big or small, is worth celebrating. They all help your business continue to grow.
Tip: Offering your products across different platforms, such as your own website and Etsy, can help you reach a wider range of customers.

I worked in the Lemon Fizz shop yesterday and did some restocking for Christmas.

I also got an inquiry about doing a personalised baby card. I said yes I can do it and got the order on the spot!

My bestie Kelly was down for the full week to hang out. We went out to lunch, did a day in Hahndorf and even did a shift in Lemon Fizz together.

It was bring your bestie to work with you yesterday. Kelly helped me set up a display with my products out the front of the shop. I made cards and tended to customers while Kelly read a book when we were not yapping on to one another that is.

It was my only Nefews birthday and he is now a teenager so I had to make him a card.

It's getting to that time of the year again so I am working on some Christmas cards to put in all the shops.

I have also changed my display in the Nairne Post Office and put up my Christmas Scrapbooks, Christmas Origami Envelopes and my new Christmas Cards.
