Running a Small Business - January update 2026

Susan Hollitt

Hi, I'm Susie, the face behind Cards and Crafts by Susie, a small handmade card business based in Australia.

Join me as I share what the first month of the year has looked like behind the scenes at Cards and Crafts by Susie from getting organised after Christmas to new ideas and fresh beginnings.

The first week back was all about replacing my Christmas stock with something fresh. I spent time making new painting kits and creating new tags ready for Lemon Fizz so the displays were ready for the new year. It felt good to slowly get back into creating without the pressure of the Christmas rush.

  • What I'm learning: Getting back into work after a break takes time, and that's okay. Restarting is part of the process, not a sign that you're falling behind.
  • Tip: Give yourself permission to ease back into work after a holiday. Starting slowly often leads to better creativity and less burnout.

I spent the last part of the month creating new Valentine's Day cards and working several shifts at Lemon Fizz. One of the biggest highlights of the month was signing the contract to stock my cards at Harbour Collective in Goolwa. It was an exciting opportunity and one that I had been working towards for some time.

Alongside preparing stock for my new shop, I also received some lovely custom orders, including a Mother's Day Activity Box for two children, a Valentine's Day Activity Box for two children, and an order for 100 pink hearts. Every custom order is different, and I always enjoy bringing someone else's ideas to life.

  • What I'm learning: New opportunities often arrive because of the work you've already been doing behind the scenes. Staying consistent really does pay off.
  • Tip: Don't be afraid to say yes to new opportunities. They can open doors you hadn't even considered.

Looking back, January wasn't about huge achievements or dramatic changes. It was about finding my rhythm again after Christmas, rebuilding momentum, and laying the foundations for the year ahead. Some days were more productive than others, but every step helped move my business forward.

As I head into February, I'm feeling organised, motivated, and excited to continue growing Cards and Crafts by Susie. Here's to another year of creativity, learning, and sharing my handmade journey with you.

Susie x
