Running a Small Business - April Update 2026

Running a Small Business - April Update 2026

Susan Hollitt

Hi, I’m Susie, the face behind Cards and Crafts by Susie, a small handmade card business based in Australia.

This is a behind-the-scenes look at what running my small business has looked like throughout April, from new creations and shop restocks to the little moments in between.

The month started with a custom cowboy card for a little boy turning five, one of those orders that lets me get a bit playful and reminds me how special handmade cards can be for milestone moments. It’s always the personalised pieces that seem to stick with me the most.

In between orders and designs, I took a day out to visit the Monarto Zoo, with the family a proper step away from the studio. And honestly, I think I needed that more than I realised. A bit of fresh air, something different to look at, and a pause from the constant “what needs to be made next” loop. The elephants were my absolute favourite!

Easter arrived quickly (as it always does), bringing with it all the last-minute making, finishing touches, and getting everything ready for the shops. Alongside that, I’ve been working on a new range of Mother’s Day cards, testing designs, adding colour, and slowly bringing the collection together.

  • What I’m learning: Seasonal events come around faster than expected, preparation is key!!
  • Tip: Start your seasonal designs earlier than you think you need to. Your future you will thank you! ☺️

There’s also been the usual behind-the-scenes rhythm, restocking all my shops, keeping everything topped up, and making sure there’s always something new for people to find. It’s not the most exciting part of the business, but it’s the part that keeps everything moving.

  • What I’m learning: The “boring” tasks are often the most important ones.
  • Tip: Create a simple restock routine so it doesn’t build up and feel overwhelming.

I just have to add this card in! This card was made for my daughters and their friends to give to their favourite bus driver who is leaving at the end of the term. How sweet is that?! 🥰

There’s also been time spent restocking at Harbour Collective in Goolwa, which gave me the chance to create something a little different.. New beach-themed activity bags. It felt like the perfect fit for the location, and I always enjoy designing with a specific place in mind.

  • What I’m learning: Creating products tailored to where they’re being sold can make them feel more special and considered.
  • Tip: If you stock in different locations, think about what suits each space, it can help your products stand out.

Alongside that, I’ve been putting together DIY Mother’s Day card kits, something simple, creative, and perfect for kids to make their own special cards. These are always fun to create because I know they’re not just a product, they’re an experience.

  • What I’m learning: Products that involve interaction or creativity often have a different kind of value.
  • Tip: Think about how your products can do something, not just be something.

And then there was a small moment that made me smile…

While I was in Lemon Fizz, I spotted the perfect Mother’s Day gift, my friend Glenda’s sea glass plant card paired with a glass of plants. I may have taken a photo and sent a very clear hint to the girls about what they could get me this year

  • What I’m learning: Supporting other small businesses is just as important as growing my own.
  • Tip: Don’t forget to celebrate and share other makers, it builds community, not competition.

Right at the end of the month, I finished off one last order, a Mother’s Day wine card. It felt like a fitting way to wrap up April, combining creativity with a bit of fun.

This month has been a reminder that running a small business isn’t just about what gets made, it’s about everything happening around it too.

The busy days, the slower moments, and the little things that make it all worthwhile.

I’ve learned to appreciate both the productive days and the quieter ones, and to trust that they all have a place in the bigger picture.
I’m ready to see what May brings next.
